Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeliner Swatches and Review
Friday, July 1, 2011
I was able to play around with Tarte's Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeliner Duo and I am glad these performed just like my favorite gel or even liquid liners. Tarte is known for their Amazonian Clay line. Clay is deposited on the banks of the Amazon river where it is solar baked and harvested for this line. Tarte claims that this substance is intuitive and skin-smart. The fact that it is infused in eye liner displays such intuitiveness. Oily lids? Amazonian clay minimizes oil in and around the pores to balance skin and keep product in place. Dry lids? The clay hydrates skin naturally to restore moisture and keep product from flaking off.
It comes in a variety of shades. The first three were introduced in May of this year: Black, brown and plum. Next shades available this month are navy and turquoise (so excited to try these!). Lastly, the following shades will be available in September: Plum bronze and green.
Here are some swatches:

My Take: I admit I am not much of a fan of pencil liners because they usually tug on the lids. I prefer liquid and gel liners because I want the product to glide like butter on my lids without tugging, and to create precise, liquid-looking lines. However, I was pleasantly surprised with these Amazonian clay liners. They glide like a dream on the lashline, they don't tug at all. Application was easy-breezy, and I was blown away by how pigmented these are. Take a look at the swatches above and see for yourself.
You actually have the look of gel/liquid liners with the convenience and ease in application of a pencil in these babies. I personally have oily lids so I put the product to the test. I applied this on my lashline at 7:30 a.m., and it was still going strong when I took off my makeup late in the night. I have not tried this in the water to test Tarte's waterproof claims, but the fact that it stayed put definitely showed its staying power. I will update this review once I have used it in the pool.
I also like that this product was formulated without parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate or any synthetic fragrance. It is also an eyeliner pencil that does not need a sharpener for added convenience. Just twist the base of the tube to release more product.
All in all, this is a cool product to try if you like the precise lines of a liquid liner or gel but are intimidated by these. The amazonian clay pencils produce precise lines with the pencil liner's ease of application. Right now, these come in twos (hence they are called Amazonian clay waterproof eyeliner duo) and are exclusively sold on QVC.com as of today. It retails for $28 as a duo.
The Shades Of U Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
