I have used Gillette for years, and have had the wide-handled Gillette for women from I think ten years ago. This time, they have the innovative design that has not one, not two, not even three, but five blades with the "Protective Ribbons Of Moisture" (I love how they phrased that!). The five blades were designed to really cut the hair as closest to the skin as possible, while the ribbons of moisture prevent any nicks and cuts.
There are two important features that I look for in a razor: First, I want a close shave. I don't want to shave everyday, so I want a shave as close to the skin as possible. Two, I hate, hate, hate nicks and cuts. I chuck out every damn razor that has nicked me in the past. Totally not worth saving the thing. The marriage of the two in one razor would make me a buyer for life.
So did Venus Embrace pass my standards?
UPSIDE: I love how smooth my legs felt after I used this. It made a pretty close shave (my skin feels soft and smooth for a couple of days), and the greatest part is that I never got nicks or cuts while using it. That alone is already a big plus for me. I also felt that the "Protective Ribbons of Moisture" did indeed make my skin supple and moisturized. I usually itch after shaving if the area has not been properly moisturized, but I didn't feel the itch using Venus Embrace. I also like the idea of the ShowerPod™ with the suction cup. I am glad Gillette was thoughtful enough to provide the cradle for the razor, especially since this will most likely be residing in a shower stall and not on the sink. Just the fact that Venus Embrace addressed my two foremost concerns regarding a razor makes this product a good buy for me.
DOWNSIDE: I feel that it can still improve in the "closest shave" department were it not for the Ribbons of Moisture. I do believe, however, that they designed the product the best they could, in order to balance the two requirements of (a) good, clean, close shave, and (b) having moisturizing properties. I know that the Ribbons of Moisture are vital in order to protect the skin from nicks and cuts and obviously to keep the skin moisturized, but these very characteristics prevent the razor from getting as close to the skin as possible. I think Gillette compromised in that sense, but it did deliver, just not as close as I think it would have made were it not for those moisture strips. Also, the head is a tad big, so it takes a little getting used to. The refills are not cheap as well.
All in all, though, I believe this is a functional and efficient product, and the five blades really give the psychological comfort that I am getting a really close shave.
