I was able to try one of MAC's most-talked about formulas this year. The new MAC Extra Dimension is a new liquid-powder hybrid formula that gives off prismatic reflections for that sculpted, highlighted and ever-glowing skin look. It has a very fluffy, bouncy texture that is almost identical to Estee Lauder's Modern Mercury tri-brid system (gel, fluid and powder in one). I have tried both variants- the skinfinish and the eye shadows, but we will be focusing on the skinfinishes in this entry.
I gotta say that it was a bit difficult to take photos of the products because of the highly metallic sheen to them. The shades change at every angle and lighting, so I tried to show pictures on how they look like in different instances.
The product in the compact is in 3D with its soft whipped-like appearance, which goes with the "extra dimension theme". You can also see the MAC lettering etched on the product. For that alone, it is already a very pretty compact.
The feel of these products is very similar to Estee Lauder's Pure Color Modern Mercury Illuminating Powder Gelee. It is a "multi-powder" formula that creates a soft shimmer on the skin when applied dry and a darker flush of color when applied wet. It contains a unique blend of golden pigments and pearls that give a pretty luminosity. When you feel the product in the compact with your finger, it has a bouncy quality to it, similar to the Modern Mercury powder gelee. That's how you know that it is not purely in powder form, but a certain hybrid that kicks the concept up a notch.

Just like the regular mineralize skinfinishes, these are on the metallic side. They have a similar finish, but the texture of the Extra Dimension skinfinish is not powdery like the MSFs. They also do not settle on the skin in a way like the MSFs do. I found that they are softer-lookinig on the skin as the day goes on when applied dry. They give a subtle sheen but not overpowering. They really do have a bouncy feel and texture that you have to try to appreciate. If you want a really metallic look like some of the MSFs, you can apply these wet.
Whisper of Gilt is a light, soft white gold with shimmery sheen. Superb is a soft peachy nude with multi-dimension shimmer that reminds me of Shimpagne MSF. Glorify is a copper with shimmer that reminds me of Gold Deposit MSF. I collect MSFs and they are some of my favorite MAC products, so these new Extra Dimension skinfinishes are way up my alley. You can even use these wet for a really metallic, out of this world sheen to your skin.
All in all, if you do not like shimmery skinfinishes, these are not for you. I am however all for highlighters so I like these. I apply these using a dense kabuki or for a lighter finish, a small duo-fibre brush like the MAC 188 would be perfect. They do give a subtler sheen when applied dry, and a metallic shimmer when applied wet. They look really pretty on the skin and gives it a nice glow, which is perfect for summer. I guess the only downside is that you have to apply a primer under your makeup to even out the complexion and lessen the appearance of pores, as these skinfinishes can accentuate them.
These retail for $28 and are selling fast. I last heard that Superb has been sold out on the website, although I don't know if MAC has replenished stocks.
The Shades Of U Rating: 4.25 out of 5
